You’ve found your dream home in Fairbanks AK, but now comes the difficult part— moving all of your belongings from one home to the next. Moving tends to top the list as one of the most stressful times in a new homeowner‘s life and without proper preparations, it can be! But Madden Real Estate is happy to share the many ways you can avoid common moving mishaps, from packing to hiring a moving company to loading the truck!
If you will be moving to a new home in Alaska this spring or summer, reading the following tips to avoid moving mistakes should be on the top of your list!
Problem: Not Allowing Enough Time
There is an easy fix to this common moving problem— simply start early and give yourself enough time that you don’t feel rushed. Once you have your closing date set or your moving out date, you’ll want to count backwards at least eight weeks, but preferably ten. Start sorting through your belongings, coordinating movers and determining all costs involved.
Problem: Not Checking Mover Reviews
Remember, not all moving companies are created equal. You will want to do your research prior to hiring a moving company to assist with your transition into a new home. That means looking through customer reviews, checking references or even gathering recommendations from family, friends or your real estate agent.
Problem: Not Reading the Moving Contract
Moving contracts can come with fine print and disclaimers, so it’s important to read through every line carefully. Be sure you are informed about what happens if something should break, damage or go missing during the move. You will also want to be aware of any additional costs that you could be subject to.
Problem: Not Sorting Through Everything
You will want to sort through all of your belongings prior to the move as if you do not, they have a tendency to remain in boxes until your next move. Dedicate a day to pulling everything out of cupboards and closets, packing what you need and donating anything you don’t plan to use in the future.
Problem: Not Organizing Boxes
There is nothing worse than arriving at your new house in Fairbanks, North Pole or the surrounding areas and not being able to find your toothbrush. Carefully label each box and make sure you’re only placing items that match the category or room in that specific box. It is also wise to keep a box of the essentials you’ll need for the first night separate and with you during the drive to the new house.
