Fairbanks began as a mining town with the discovery of gold by Italian immigrant, Felix Pedro in 1902. Captain E.T. Barnette soon built a trading post on the banks of the Chena River, and after several other key gold strikes north of town, Fairbanks was incorporated in 1903.
